Introduction

The Club has been playing in Rowntree Park since the 1950’s and is the most centrally positioned tennis club in York.

The main objectives of the Club are enshrined in its Rules and Constitution:

  • The principal objective is to provide an affordable venue and facilities for the local community to participate in the game of lawn tennis regardless of race, ethnic origin, creed, colour, age, disability, sex, occupation, sexual orientation, religion, political or other beliefs.
  • It is the aim of the Club to provide coaching facilities of all age groups.

The Club makes no profits. All surpluses are put towards a sinking fund that is intended to fund the replacement of the courts on a 5-7 year time scale.

News for season commencing 1 April 2019

The Club continues its agreement with City of York Council to supervise tennis on all six of the Rowntree Park courts.

The courts have been professionally cleaned prior to the start of the season.

Tennis For Kids courses continue this year.

Juniors (Under 16s)

From our Rules and Constitution:

  • Any person shall be eligible for full membership provided they are 16 years of age or over. Those under 16 may join as junior members but without the right to vote or hold office.

Juniors have the same rights to court access as Adult members.

Shoe Tags

Members will be provided with a club shoe tag which must be worn whenever playing on the courts so that club supervisors can identify members.

Club Ladder

We have a club ladder for mixed singles matches hosted by TennisRungs. This is for members and runs throughout the year.

WhatsApp Groups

Email whatsapp@rowntreeparktennis.org.uk if you'd like to join any of these groups:

  • Anyone For Tennis?
    • This group seeks to solve the following problem: "I have a court booking. I want someone to play with me. I don't really care who. How do I find out who is free? It maybe at almost zero notice." You don't have to be a member of the club to join the group (though we'd hope persuade you that it's a good idea!).  As of April 2019 the group had 26 members.
  • RPTC Club Sessions
    • Are you going to the Park on a Thursday evening or a Saturday afternoon? Let others know via this group.
  • RP Box Leagues
    • Mixed Singles Tennis Leagues at Rowntree Park are organised via this group.

Club Play

Club play sessions for members run from April to September on Thursdays at 18:30 and Saturdays at 14:00 on Courts 5 and 6 (over-flowing on to Court 4 if needed). Members may arrange play between themselves (and book Courts 4-6 online at no cost) at other times (if no team matches or other organised activities are taking place). The Club Ladder and the WhatsApp Group are useful vehicles for finding other people who want to play.

Team Play

The Club has six teams: three Men’s Doubles who play on a Sunday morning or afternoon, two Mixed Doubles who play on an evening from 18:30 (home games are usually Mondays and Tuesdays) and one Ladies' Doubles who usually play on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Visitors

From our Rules and Constitution:

  • Every member shall have the right to introduce visitors subject to such regulations as are in force. Each visitor is the guest of, and must be accompanied by, the member introducing him or her.

Any member is expected to pay the Treasurer (or other committee member) £3 per visitor at the next available opportunity. Full members may host Social members at peak times without the need to pay the visitor fee.
